Muitos anos antes do 25 de Abril Manuel Alegre escreveu sobre o País de Abril, Maio e os cravos vermelhos.

Nesta antologia há muitos poemas que falam de Abril antes de Abril e de Maio antes de Maio, em Praça da Canção, editada em 1964, e em O Canto e as Armas, de 1967.
Em O Canto e as Armas há, por exemplo, aqueles quatro versos de «Poemarma» que, decerto, anunciam o primeiro comunicado da Revolução:

«Que o poema seja microfone e fale
uma noite destas de repente às três e tal
para que a lua estoire e o sono estale
e a gente acorde finalmente em Portugal».

Mas, também, em «Lisboa perto e longe», a estrofe que canta, sete anos antes, Lisboa na rua, de cravo vermelho na mão, no Primeiro de Maio de 1974:

«Lisboa tem um cravo em cada mão
tem camisas que Abril desabotoa
mas em Maio Lisboa é uma canção
onde há versos que são cravos vermelhos
Lisboa que ninguém verá de joelhos.»
